The ability to describe something well in writing is a very important skill that we should have. Today we will write a paragraph to help us to refine our descriptive writing skill.
Writing a
descriptive paragraph
A descriptive paragraph describes how something looks or feels. In
descriptive paragraphs, you can describe people, places, objects, or events.
The main purpose is to create an image in the reader’s minds. In short, it is like
painting a picture with words.

My country India
India is my country. I am a
citizen of India. Our country is known by different ferent names such as
Bharat, Hindustan and Hind. Ours is a very vast country and many people live in
this country. In our country people belonging to various castes and creeds live
together. We have unity among ourselves. All the citizens have the right to
speak and to study. Our national language is Hindi. There are other languages
also, which are spoken in the country. They are Bengali, Malyalam, Tamil,
Punjabi etc. Our national anthem is 'Jana Gana Mana." We have our own
national flag. Hockey is our national game, peacock is the national bird and
lion is our national animal. In the north of our country there are Himalayas
which protect us from winds and give rise to many rivers such as Ganga,
Brahmaputra and Yamuna, etc. In the south, there are many seas and oceans. Our
country is an independent country, and it is the best example of unity in
diversity. We are proud of it.
India is the land of my birth. It is the land of Rama and Krishna, Kabir and Nanak and warriors like Shivaji, Rana Pratap, Banda Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. It is the land of the Mahabharat and the Ramayana and the Gita. There are several temples, mosques and gurdwaras in our country. It is the biggest democracy in the world. It has a very old culture. It has a glorious past. It has produced many patriots and freedom fighters. It is a country where 80 per cent of the people live on agriculture. Besides, 80 percent of the Indians live in villages. It has a very big coast-line. It is surrounded by the Himalayas on the North. People belonging to different religions live here. People living in different states speak different languages in our country. There are several beautiful places in our country. The Kashmir Valley, the Taj at Agra, the Ajanta and Elora caves are worth seeing. It is a land where people are God-fearing and religious minded. But it is also one of the poorest countries of the world. We do not have good leaders. Our administrators are corrupt and good at misusing their powers. Our police are the worst. We do not have any national character. I should not be blamed if I do not feel proud of such a country.

My village
Although my village is small, it’s very beautiful
and lovely. My village is divided into four hamlets which are directed and
supervised by heads of hamlet who are in charge of and responsible for the
activities of their hamlet. In the middle of the village stands an ancient
pagoda where the villagers gather to make offerings to the God of Agriculture
on the 15th day of the first lunar month. On the left flows peacefully a blue
and clear river where I used to take a swim on hot days when I was young.
Almost the houses in my village are built on high ground to avoid floods in the
rainy season. The villagers live chiefly on agriculture. All year round they
cling to their soil, thinking of the best ways to force their soil to produce
more food and vegetables to their families. They get rich owning to their
creative work and industriousness. The harvest time is always the merriest and
busiest season of the year. How I love my native village! It’s in this nice and
lovely place that I was born and have grown up and spent wonderful days of my
childhood. It’s the cradle, the paradise of my whole life!
My Village
By Dedi Turmudi,S.Pd.,M.A TESOL
If you visit my house you will find it shocking. Because my village is still
undeveloped. The streets are stony and dusty. Moreover they are muddy in the
rainy season. You may have problem if you drive your motor cycle toward my
house. Along the streets, there are no electricity posts. It is likely to get
lost at night if you pass by this village. Also, there is no ground telephone
line. Few people have mobiles due to bad sign they can receive. People use
kerosene light at night. No wonder, you may find my nose black of fumes when I
get up in the morning. In the daily life, people use firewood to cook. This is
because the gas program and even kerosene are hard to find. Nevertheless, I
feel at home in my village because I can breathe fresh air in the morning and
listen many birds are singing as I get up every day.
